Harvey Norman aiming to empower Aussies by keeping them in jobs
Sky News host Paul Murray says Harvey Norman is 'close to our hearts' as they work to keep small business people across the nation in a job and do a 'magnificent job of keeping this country going'.

Australia’s unemployment levels have worsened with Scott Morrison pointing the finger at Victoria’s stage 4 restrictions for the jobs growth setback.
Australia’s official unemployment figure for the month of September has risen from 6.8 to 6.9 per cent, driven by a drop in the number of Victorians employed following the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Prime Minister said the country would have continued its previous increase in the number of employed people if it was not for the southern state’s persistent harsh lockdown measures.
“We have already had a very strong bounce back over the past few months,” Mr Morrison said.
“In the last two months alone, more than 170,000 jobs all around the country, bar Victoria, have come back into the economy. Down in Victoria I know they are feeling it incredibly hard … that is why we have got to get Victoria open safely again.”

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the number of employed people nationally fell by 30,000 between August and September, while unemployment levels rose by 11,000.
“The September data provides further insights into the labour market impacts from the stage 4 restrictions in Victoria,” ABS head of labour statistics Bjorn Jarvis said.
“Employment in Victoria decreased by 36,000 following a fall of 37,000 in August. Hours worked in the state fell by a further 2.1 per cent following the 4.6 per cent fall in August.”
Labor Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the government should not be making cuts to JobKeeper payments while unemployment levels are still rising.
“We now have almost a million Australians unemployed and it’s expected to get worse before it gets better,” Dr Chalmers said.

Employment Minister Michaelia Cash said the majority of the 29,000 jobs lost were from Victoria’s stage 4 restrictions.
“There is a direct correlation there between the stage 4 restrictions in Victoria and the rise in the unemployment rate,” she said.
“The figures show that across Australia there was actually a net increase in employment of 6000 jobs. In Victoria they lost 35,500 jobs.”
Senator Cash said there had also been a slight downturn in the participation rate.

ANZ economists are expecting unemployment to increase to 7.2 per cent, with job losses primarily concentrated in Victoria where ongoing shutdown measures persist.
“Participation in Victoria will likely fall again, but it could continue to rise in other parts of the country, reflecting the gradual return of mutual obligations to receive JobSeeker outside Victoria,” ANZ economist Catherine Birch said.
Westpac is also expecting unemployment to hit 7.2 per cent.
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg was on Thursday in Adelaide spruiking the federal budget.
Prior to the labour figures being released, he said the market was not expecting the September unemployment rate to fall as it did in August.

“We would expect the unemployment rate to actually rise before the end of the year to around 8 per cent,” Mr Frydenberg said.

“The reason being is you’ve still got a very difficult situation in Victoria with jobs being lost in that state.
“Next year we will see the unemployment rate come down to 7.25 per cent by mid-next year and then to 6.5 per cent the year after that and then to 6 per cent and then to 5.5 per cent by mid-2024.”
Mr Frydenberg said it would take a long time for employment levels to return to the February figure of 5.1 per cent.
“But what we’re doing in this budget is providing every possible support to ensure that businesses can get to the other side and that young people and older people and right across the economy that workers can stay employed,” he said.
In August, unemployment dipped to 6.8 per cent from 7.5 per cent in July, with the fall largely a result of significant jobs growth in NSW and Western Australia.
However, ongoing restrictions in Victoria have continued to cause jobs growth to dwindle within the state.
